Can you believe it’s almost 2019? I personally feel as though the years are flying by faster than ever before. Maybe this is because of the never-ending to-do list that seems to accompany adulthood or maybe it’s because most of us struggle with balancing work, family and personal time. Whatever the reason may be the fact remains that life is happening and time is passing. No matter what you do (or don’t do) the time keeps passing.
I don’t want to get too philosophical but the idea of time passing was something I thought about while having my morning coffee. For me, I spent more time focusing on what I don’t do. The hobbies I’ve let go because of my work schedule, the money I could be saving if spent time reviewing personal finances and my own estate plan. Although not too much has changed in my own life I constantly tell my clients to review their estate plans every 2-3 years – it’s time I practiced what I preach.
This January I’m going to make time to review my retirement and financial accounts and review my estate planning documents. I will tell you what I tell my clients: you should take some time to review your current estate planning documents you have to ensure that it’s still accomplishing your goals and not outdated. If you’ve never created an estate plan before then I encourage you to make this the year of “getting things done” and get it done! The Florida probate system is no joke. It would be a shame if your assets were tied up in the Court system for 6 months or longer with a lawyer pocketing some of the money intended for your beneficiaries.
Make 2019 the year of DONE. Stop putting activities that you love on the backburner and don’t procrastinate any longer with creating a plan for those that you love. For me, I’m going to do the same with respect to planning and I’m also going to set aside time for activities that I enjoy. Life is short, make it sweet.
